Must-Know Introductory Photoshop Skills for Beginner Photographers

Both designers and photographers alike love using Photoshop program. It is an essential tool that helps in editing photos. Available both as a creative cloud plan and monthly subscription, it is easily accessible and has many pros. However, using Photoshop can be pretty overwhelming to use especially for beginners.

The default interface of the program is crammed with sliders, buttons, and other assorted tools which might not be helpful for you as a beginner, but worthy to learn.

1. Non-Destructive editing

Whenever possible, always try to edit your images in a no-destructive mode. Using this method ensures that you can edit images as much as you like and can undo the changes and always revert back to the original file if need be. A tool like Lightroom has the non-destructive editing capability, although Photoshop does not have the mode.

2. Discover Adjustment Layers

Using adjustment layers allows you as a photographer to make changes to an image’s color and tone in a non-destructive manner. You can always stack as many images to the adjustment layer as you as need be. To use this feature, click on Layers Panel on the upper toolbar and select Adjustment layers.

From here, you need to choose the type of edit you would want to make. A property box will open with the corresponding tool you have selected.

Once this is done, you only need to move the sliders to make the necessary changes to your image. The main merit of using the adjustment layer is that it can be edited at any time.

3. Instant Automatic Fixes

In Photoshop, you will have a number of quick automatic fixes for processing your images. The most basic automatic tools to use in Photoshop are found at the Image Menu. Auto contrast, auto color, and Auto tone.


Even after applying one of the features, you can fine-tune it a little by navigating to the edit menu and use the available options depending on what you want to achieve on your image. In addition, most of the adjustment options in Photoshop have Auto Settings. You can create an adjustment layer for every level.

4. Make your Images Pop with Levels

It is always common for raw photos to look flat before editing. In most instances, adding a contrast just helps solve the issue by making them to pop.

The contrast or brightness may seem obvious to use, but if you want better results, you can use either the curve or level tools. to use levels use crtl+l on windows to open the layers and start editing your images.

5. Clean shots with the spot healing brush

No matter how keen you are when taking the shots, there is always a possibility that something needs to be edited to get a perfect image. Getting rid of imperfections on your image are very easy using a healing brush. Simply select the spot healing brush from the toolbar or from your keyboard press J.


You can adjust the size of the brush using the square bracket keys and set it to the same size as the object you want to remove. Additionally, ensure that the content aware setting is selected from the options bar. Then click on the spot you are removing by clicking on the larger object. A spot healing brush always works best on small areas. Although it can as well be used to fix larger problems.
